Pisgah National Forest

Pisgah National Forest in western North Carolina encompasses more than 500,000 acres of protected lands the mountains.

Ranger Districts:


There are three ranger districts that make up Pisgah National Forest.

Appalachian Ranger District:


The Appalachian Ranger District is located northwest and northeast of Asheville.


Grandfather Ranger District:


The Grandfather Ranger District is located south and east of the Blue Ridge Parkway between Old Fort and Blowing Rock.


Pisgah Ranger District:


The Pisgah Ranger District is located southwest of Asheville in Transylvania, Buncombe and Haywood Counties.


Wilderness Areas:


There are three wilderness areas in Pisgah National Forest.

Linville Gorge Wilderness:


Linville Gorge Wilderness preserves the rugged gorge formed by Linville River in the Grandfather Ranger District.


Middle Prong Wilderness:


Middle Prong Wilderness protects the Middle Prong of West Fork Pigeon River in the Pisgah Ranger District.
