Nantahala National Forest

Nantahala National Forest is the largest of the four national forests in North Carolina at more than 530,000 acres in the far western part of the state.

Ranger Districts:


Cheoah Ranger District:


Cheoah Ranger District covers more than 120,000 acres in Graham and Swain Counties including four large mountain lakes.


Nantahala Ranger District:


The Nantahala Ranger District encompasses 250,000 acres in Macon, Jackson and Swain Counties.


Wilderness Areas:


There are three wilderness areas in Nantahala National Forest.

Ellicott Rock Wilderness:


Ellicott Rock Wilderness is located where North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia meet and is jointly managed with Sumter National Forest and Chattahoochee National Forest.


Joyce Kilmer-Slick Wilderness:


Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock Wilderness protects an area of old growth forest and is partially in Cherokee National Forest in Tennessee.
