Cities:


  • Charleston is the largest city in South Carolina, located along the coast.

State Parks:


  1. Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site protects the site of the first English settlement in what is now South Carolina.
  2. Kings Mountain State Park protects the Piedmont mountains just across the state line from North Carolina.
  3. Landsford Canal State Park protects a historical canal and ford with one of the largest remaining populations of spider lilies on the Catawba River.
  4. Keowee-Toxaway State Park has hiking, camping and water activities along Lake Keowee in Pickens County.
  5. Oconee State Park is a mountain park located in the upstate with hiking, camping and swimming.
  6. Oconee Station State Historic Site protects the site of a SC Militia frontier outpost from the 18th century.
  7. Poinsett State Park protects an area of the High Hills of Santee where the Sandhills meet the Coastal Plain.
  8. Wildcat Wayside is a small state park unit within Mountain Bridge Wilderness with several waterfalls.

Heritage Preserves/Wildlife Management Areas:


  1. Eva Russell Chandler Heritage Preserve/Wildlife Management Area protects 250 acres in the Mountain Bridge Wilderness.
  2. Jocassee Gorges Wildlife Management Area protects a large area in the Upstate along the Blue Ridge Escarpment.
  3. Stumphouse Mountain Heritage Preserve/Wildlife Management Area protects an area near Walhalla featuring old railroad tunnels.
  4. Victoria Bluff Heritage Preserve/Wildlife Management Area is a nature preserve near Hilton Head Island that protects a pine-saw palmetto flatwoods community.

National Parks:


There is one national park is South Carolina and several other National Park service units.

  1. Congaree National Park protects the floodplain forest of Congaree River and is home to numerous champion trees.
  2. Cowpens National Battlefield protects the site of the Revolutionary War battlefield.
  3. Kings Mountain National Military Park commemorates the battle of Kings Mountain.

National Forests:


There are two national forests in South Carolina covering land in the mountains, Piedmont and coastal plain.

  1. Francis Marion National Forest is a coastal forest located between Myrtle Beach and Charleston.
  2. Sumter National Forest covers three ranger districts in the Piedmont and mountain region.

Wilderness Areas:


There are several wilderness areas in South Carolina.

  1. Congaree National Park Wilderness encompasses most of Congaree National Park.
