Francis Marion National Forest

Francis Marion National Forest is a 258,000-acre forest in the coastal plain of South Carolina in Charleston and Berkeley Counties. The forest is named for Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox, a Revolutionary War Hero known for his irregular methods of warfare against the British in the swamps of South Carolina. The Swamp Fox Passage of the Palmetto Trail running through the forest is also named in his honor. The forest offers a number of outdoor recreation activities, including hiking, mountain biking, camping, shooting ranges, and water activities.

Palmetto Trail - Swamp Fox Passage:


The Swamp Fox Passage of the Palmetto Trail runs for 47 miles through the forest.  The eastern  trailhead is along US-17.
