Nantahala Ranger District Nantahala

The Nantahala Ranger District is the largest district in Nantahala National Forest at 250,000 acres in Macon, Jackson and Swain Counties.

Areas:


Bonas Defeat:


Bonas Defeat is a rugged gorge on the upper Tuckaseegee River.  Access to the gorge is extremely difficult.


Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory:


Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory is a research forest studying the effects of forestry techniques on the hydrology of the Coweeta Creek drainage.


Cullasaja Gorge:


Cullasaja Gorge is a section of the Mountain Waters Scenic Byway between Highlands and Franklin with numerous waterfalls.


Ellicott Rock Wilderness:


Ellicott Rock Wilderness is located where North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia come together.


Nantahala River Gorge:


Nantahala River Gorge is one of the most popular whitewater rivers in the eastern United States.




Panthertown Valley:


Panthertown Valley is a backcountry area in Jackson county with numerous waterfalls and backcountry hiking and camping.


Silver Run Falls:


Silver Run Falls is small area with access to the beautiful Silver Run Falls along NC-107 south of Cashiers.


Southern Nantahala Wilderness:


A small portion of Southern Nantahala Wilderness is in the Nantahala Ranger District in Macon County.


Standing Indian:


The Standing Indian area west of Franklin has campgrounds and many miles of trails, including the Appalachian Trail.


Wayah Bald Area:


The Wayah Bald Area west of Franklin contains high peaks and long distance hiking trails.


Whiteside Mountain:


Whiteside Mountain has a 2-mile trail leading to stunning views from this mountain on the Eastern Continental Divide.


Trails:


Hundreds of miles of trails run through the district including several long-distance trails.

Bartram Trail


Bartram Trail runs through the district from the Georgia state line to Nantahala River.
