Unaka Ranger District (Cherokee)

The Unaka Ranger District in Cherokee National Forest comprises forest lands north of Great Smoky Mountain National Park surrounding the Unaka Mountains and Nolichucky River.  The district contains many miles of hiking and multi-use trails, including the Appalachian Trail, campgrounds and numerous waterfalls.

Old Forge Recreation Area


Old Forge Recreation Area is a primitive campground connecting with many miles of trails in the Bald Mountains.


Paint Creek Corridor


The Paint Creek Corridor follows its namesake to the confluence with French Broad River and has camping, water activities and trails.


Sampson Mountain Wilderness


Sampson Mountain Wilderness protects its namesake mountain and surrounding land in Greene, Unicoi and Washington Counties.


Unaka Mountain Wilderness


Unaka Mountain Wilderness protects the western slope of the Unaka Mountains in Unicoi County.
