Unaka Mountain Wilderness

Unaka Mountain Wilderness, located within the Cherokee National Forest in northeastern Tennessee in Unicoi County, is a pristine and rugged area spanning over 4,400 acres. Renowned for its diverse ecosystems, the Wilderness features dense hardwood forests, spruce-fir stands, and a rich understory of rhododendron and mountain laurel. Elevations range from 2,500 to over 5,000 feet, offering striking vistas and a variety of habitats for wildlife such as black bears, white-tailed deer, and numerous bird species. The Appalachian Trail traverses a section of the wilderness, providing hikers with challenging terrain and breathtaking views, especially from the peaks of Unaka Mountain. This wilderness area is a haven for nature enthusiasts seeking solitude and a true backcountry experience, with its untouched landscapes and limited human development.
