Old Forge Recreation Area (Cherokee)

Old Forge Recreation Area is a primitive campground and forest recreation area in the Bald Mountain area in Greene County, Tennessee.  The recreation area is part of the Unaka Ranger District of Cherokee National Forest.  Several trails start from the campground and lead into the forest, connecting with Round Knob Picnic Area and Horse Creek Recreation Area.  There are several waterfalls in the area and adjacent Sampson Mountain Wilderness.

Trails:


Artie Hollow Trail (#18):


Artie Hollow Trail leads from Davis Creek Trail and heads up Artie Hollow, ending at Phillips Hollow Trail.  The trail passes by Mary Falls.


Davis Creek Trail (#19):


Davis Creek Trail starts at the Round Knob Picnic Area and descends to its namesake and follows it down to Shelton Mission Road.

Margarette Falls Trail (#189):


Margarette Falls Trail starts at the end of FR-5099 from the Bullen Hollow Trailhead.  The trail follows West Fork Dry Creek upstream 3/4 of a mile to end at the scenic 60-foot waterfall.

Margarette Falls is a beautiful 60-foot waterfall on West Fork Dry Creek.


Mary Falls:


Mary Falls is a secluded waterfall in Artie Hollow.


Pete's Branch Falls:


Pete's Branch Falls is a scenic waterfall near Horse Creek Recreation Area.


Wildlife:


Fly poison (Amianthium muscitoxicum)


A mushroom popping out a stump.


Some type of snail.


Eastern rat snake (Pantherophis alleghaniensis)


Baby copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix)
