Sampson Mountain Wilderness

The Sampson Mountain Wilderness, nestled within the Cherokee National Forest in northeastern Tennessee in Greene, Unicoi and Washington Counties, is a pristine and rugged area that offers a true backcountry experience. Encompassing almost 11,000 acres, this Wilderness is characterized by steep ridges, deep gorges, and lush forests that showcase a rich diversity of flora and fauna. Hikers and nature enthusiasts are drawn to its challenging trails, including the popular trail to Squibb Creek Falls, which winds through dense hardwood forests and along rushing mountain streams. The wilderness provides an ideal setting for solitude and exploration, with opportunities for wildlife viewing, backcountry camping, and scenic vistas. Trails:


Middle Spring Ridge Trail (#4)


Middle Spring Ridge Trail splits from Squibb Creek Trail and heads steeply up the ridge, ending at the intersection with Turkey Pen Cove Trail.


Squibb Creek Trail (#23)


Squibb Creek Trail starts from FR-94/Horse Creek Road at Horse Creek Recreation Area, crossing a bridge and entering the wilderness.  Turkey Pen Cove Trail and Middle Spring Ridge Trail split off in the first half mile.  The trail follows Squibb Creek upstream for 2 mile ending at Squibb Creek Falls.  There are numerous creek crossings but can usually be crossed dry.


Turkey Pen Cove Trail (#15)


Turkey Pen Cove Trail splits from Squibb Creek Trail and heads up the cove, ending at Middle Spring Ridge Trail to make a loop.  With switchbacks, its not quite as steep Middle Spring Ridge Trail.

Squibb Creek Falls is a 20-foot waterfall at the end of the trail.
