Blue Ridge Parkway Highlands District

The Highlands District is the northern half of the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina, stretching from the Virginia state line at mile post 216 to the Museum of North Carolina Minerals at mile post 331.

Points of Interest:


The following points of interest are in ascending order by mile post starting from the Virginia state line and heading south.

Milepost 217.5: Cumberland Knob - Cumberland Knob is the site where construction began on the Blue Ridge Parkway and was the first developed recreation area.


Milepsot 230.1: Little Glade Mill Pond - A scenic little pond with a short trail leading around.


Milepost 232.5: Stone Mountain Overlook - Views of Stone Mountain, a conspicuous granite dome in Stone Mountain State Park.


Milepost 233.7:
Bullhead Mountain Overlook - View looking down towards the lowlands below Bullhead Mountain.


Milepost 235.7:
Devil's Garden Overlook - View of a narrow opening between the mountains looking down towards the Piedmont.  The Mountains-to-Sea Trail descends from here to Stone Mountain State Park, leaving the parkway for the Piedmont.


Milepost 238.5:
Brinegar Cabin - A 19th century cabin with access to the trails of Doughton Park and the Mountains-to-Sea Trail.


Milepost 241.1: Doughton Park - Parkway recreation area with campground, historical buildings and 30 miles of hiking trails.


Milepost 242.4: Alligator Back Overlook - Nice views from near the top of Bluff Mountain with access to the to the trails of Doughton Park and the Mountains-to-Sea Trail.


Milepost 243.4: View Bluff Mountain - Nice views of Bluff Mountain with access to the to the trails of Doughton Park and the Mountains-to-Sea Trail.


Milepost 244.7:  Basin Cove Overlook has views of Basin Cove and provides access to the trails of Doughton Park and the Mountains-to-Sea Trail.


Milepost 267.8: View Betseys Rock Falls - Overlook with a view of the tall waterfall flowing down North Prong Lewis Fork.


Milepost 271.9: E.B. Jeffress Park is a small recreation area with a picnic area, an interpretive trail leading to Cascade Falls and access to the Mountains-to-Sea Trail.


Milepost 274.3:  Elk Mountain Overlook has panoramic views of the Yadkin Valley.


Milepost 277.3: Stoney Fork Overlook - Overlook with a view down into Stoney Fork Valley and a great place to catch sunrise.


Milepost 277.9:
View Osborne Mountain - Overlook with view of Osborne Mountain to the southwest.


Milepost 278.3: Carroll Gap Overlook - Overlook with pastoral views of Watauga County.


Milepost 281.4:
Grandview Overlook - A scenic overlook with views of the Yadkin Valley.


Milepost 289.5:  Raven Rocks Overlook - A scenic overlook with a large rock ledge and view looking west, making it a good stop for viewing sunset.  The Mountains-to-Sea Trail can be accessed from this overlook.


Milepost 289.8:
Yadkin Valley Overlook - A small overlook with views of the Yadkin Valley.


Milepost 290.4: Thunder Hill Overlook - Overlook with great views of the foothills and Piedmont and one of the best places to catch the sunrise on the parkway.  The Mountains-to-Sea Trail can be accessed from this overlook.


Milepost 294.1: Moses Cone Memorial Park features an early 20th century estate with 25 miles of carriage trails.


Milepost 295.3:
Sims Creek Overlook - Overlook of Sims Creek just before the bridge and provides access to Green Knob Trail in Julian Price Memorial Park.


Milepost 295.9:
Sims Pond Overlook - Overlook at Sims Pond that 
provides access to Green Knob Trail in Julian Price Memorial Park.


Milepost 296.4:
Price Park Picnic Area - A large picnic area and parking with access to Julian Price Memorial Park and Boone Fork Trail.


Milepost 296.7:
 Price Lake Overlook - View of Price Lake from the eastern end and access to Price Lake Trail at Julian Price Memorial Park.


Milepost 297.1:
Julian Price Memorial Park & Campground - A park area with hiking trails, picnic areas, a lake with boat rentals, and the largest campground on the Parkway.

Milepost 297.5: Lakeview Overlook - View of Price Lake from the western end and access to Price Lake Trail.  This is also the parking area for canoe and kayak rentals on the lake at Julian Price Memorial Park.


Milepost 299.0: Cold Prong Pond Overlook - A short trail leads from the parking area around the small pond and provides access to Tanawha Trail.


Milepost 299.9: Boone Fork Parking Area provides access to the Tanawah Trail and the Nuwati and Daniel Boone Scout Trails in Grandfather Mountain State Park.


Milepost 301.8: Pilot Ridge Overlook - View from Pilot Ridge towards the Piedmont.


Milepost 302.1:  View Wilson Creek Valley - A scenic overlook with views into the Wilson Creek Valley. Wilson Creek is one of the main streams originating on Grandfather Mountain and is designated a National Wild and Scenic River.  


Milepost 302.4:
Boulder Field Overlook - View of Grandfather Mountain and Linn Cove Viaduct in the distance. A spur trail from the parking leads to Tanawha Trail. 


Milepost 302.8:
Rough Ridge Overlook - A short hike on Tanawah Trail leads to Rough Ridge, with some of the best views of Linn Cove Viaduct and Grandfather Mountain.

Milepost 303.9: Yonahlossee Overlook - Overlook with views of Grandfather Mountain and Linn Cove Viaduct.


Milepost 304.8: Stack Rock Parking Area - Provides access to Tanawah Trail near Stack Rock and views of Grandfather Mountain.


Milepost 305.2:
Beacon Heights Parking - Provides access to Beacon Heights and Tanawah Trail.


Milepost 315.6:  Camp Creek Overlook - There are no views from this spot, but a short path leads down to Camp Creek.


Milepost 316.4:
Linville Falls Recreation Area features a picnic area, campground, visitor center and trails to the scenic Linville Falls.


Milepost 323.0:
Bear Den Overlook


Milepost 328.6:
The Loops Overlook - Overlook with views of the Clinchfield Railroad and an orchard.


Waterfalls:


Basin Creek Lower Falls is a 20-foot waterfall on Basin Creek in Doughton Park that requires creek walking off trail for a good view.


Basin Creek Upper Falls is a 15-foot waterfall on Basin Creek in Doughton Park that can be seen from the trail.



Betseys Rock Falls is a tall waterfall flowing down on North Prong Lewis Fork and can be viewed from a distance at an overlook at milepost 267.8.


Boone Fork Waterfall is a small but scenic waterfall downstream from Hebron Colony Falls in Julian Price Memorial Park.


Cascade Falls is a tall sliding waterfall on Fall Creek in E. B. Jeffress Park.


Duggers Creek Falls is a small waterfall on a tributary of Linville River at Linville Falls Recreation Area.


Green Mountain Falls is a 20-foot waterfall on Green Mountain Creek as it flows under the Blue Ridge Parkway and US-221.


Gully Creek Waterfall is a small waterfall in Cumberland Knob Recreation Area.


Hebron Colony Falls is an interesting waterfall over a boulder field on Boone Fork in Julian Price Memorial Park.


Linville Falls is a spectacular waterfall at milepost 316.
