Cumberland Knob (Blue Ridge Parkway)

Cumberland Knob, located at milepost 217.5 near the Virginia state line in Surry County, is the location where construction began on the Blue Ridge Parkway in 1935 and was the first recreation area opened to the public.  The 2000-acre recreation contains picnic areas, visitor center and restrooms, and several miles of hiking trails leading to Cumberland Knob and along cascading creeks.

Cumberland Knob Trail:


Cumberland Knob Trail is an easy 0.5-mile trail that leads up to a shelter near the summit of Cumberland Knob.

Gulley Creek Trail:


Gulley Creek Trail is a strenuous 2.5-mile loop that leads downstream along its namesake past small waterfalls and cascades.
