Shenandoah National Park

Shenandoah is a more than 200,000-acre National Park located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of northwest Virginia.  The park is long and narrow, composed of lands on either side of Skyline Drive with the Shenandoah River to the west and the Virginia Piedmont to the east.  Much of the land away from the road is designated Wilderness.  In addition to Skyline Drive, there are numerous campgrounds, wildlife viewing opportunities and over 500 miles of trails, including the Appalachian Trail.

Districts:


The park is split into three districts by the two major highways that cut through the park - US-33 and US-211.

North District:


The North District is located between the north entrance near Front Royal and Thornton Gap.


Central District:


The Central District is located between the Swift Run and Thornton Gap entrances.


Trails:


There are over 500 miles of hiking trails in the park, including the Appalachian Trail.  Unlike most national parks, leashed dogs are allowed on the majority of trails.  See individual districts for a list of trails.

Waterfalls:


There are a large number of waterfalls within the park.
