San Carlos Ranger District (San Isabel)

The San Carlos Ranger District of San Isabel National Forest comprises the southern half of the forest.  At about 400,000 acres, the district measures approximately 50 miles wide and 110 miles long.  District lands are located in Fremont, Custer, Huerfano, Pueblo and Las Animas Counties.  There are three major mountain ranges in the district - Sangre de Cristos, Wet Mountains and Spanish Peaks.  Eleven campgrounds are located in the district as well as picnic areas, lakes, hundreds of miles of trails and scenic driving routes.

Bishop Castle:


Bishop Castle is a private castle within the forest boundary that was built by one man over 50 years.  It is free to visit and open to the public.


Greenhorn Mountain Wilderness:


Greenhorn Mountain Wilderness protects over 20,000 acres surrounding the highest point in the Wet Mountains.


Lake Isabel:


Lake Isabel is a scenic mountain lake at more than 8000 feet with camping, water activities, winter recreation and hiking trails.
