Appalachian Trail - Nantahala

The southernmost section of the Appalachian Trail in North Carolina is maintained by the Nantahala Hiking Club.  The club maintains 58.6 miles of trail from Bly Gap on the North Carolina-Georgia state line to the Nantahala Outdoor Center.  This section runs through the Nantahala Ranger District of Nantahala National Forest.

Route:

This section of the trail starts at Bly Gap on the state line and runs through Southern Nantahala Wilderness.  After passing by Standing Indian Mountain, it crosses US-64 at Winding Stair Gap.  The trail climbs to Silers Bald and then Wayah Bald, where it meets with Bartram Trail.

North of Wayah Bald, Bartram Trail splits and Appalachian Trail crosses Burningtown Gap and Tellico Gap and ascends to Wesser Bald where a lookout tower provides scenic views (on a clear day).

From here, it is a steep descent to the Nantahala Outdoor Center along the Nantahala River.
