Appalachian Trail

The Appalachian Trail is a National Scenic Trail running near 2,200 miles from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mount Kathadin in Maine, passing through 14 states.  One of the most popular trails in the world, more than 2 million people hike a portion of the AT each year.  The trail was conceived in 1921 and completed in 1937 through the efforts of private citizens.

States:


Georgia:


The southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail is at Springer Mountain and runs for about 75 miles to the North Carolina state line.

North Carolina:


The Appalachian Trail enters North Carolina in Southern Nantahala Wilderness and runs for 96 miles, then more than 200 along the North Carolina-Tennessee border.  The first approximately 60 miles in North Carolina is the Nantahala Section, maintained by the Nantahala Hiking Club.


Tennessee:


The Appalachian Trail runs along the North Carolina-Tennesse border for more than 200 miles then about 71 miles in Tennessee.

Virginia:


The Appalachian Trail runs for 550 miles in Virginia, more than in any other state.
