Tonto National Forest

Tonto National Forest, at more than 2.9 million acres, is the largest National Forest in Arizona and the seventh largest in the United States.  The forest contains diverse landscapes from the Sonoran desert to the ponderosa pine forests of the Mogollon Rim with elevations ranging from 1,300 feet to 7,900 feet.  Tonto Forest Reserve was established in 1905 and in 1907, became Tonto National Forest.  Today, there are endless opportunities for outdoor recreation in the forest.

Ranger Districts:


Payson Ranger District:


The Payson Ranger District covers approximately 450,000 acres surrounding the town of Payson.


Pleasant Valley Ranger District:


The Pleasant Valley Ranger District covers approximately 420,000 acres surrounding the town of Young.


Waterfalls:


There are a number of waterfalls in the forest.


  1. Ellison Creek Cascades
  2. Fossil Creek Falls
  3. Parker Creek Falls
