Rio Grande National Forest

Rio Grande is a 1.8 million-acre National Forest in south-central Colorado.  The Rio Grande starts high in the San Juan Mountains as it travels over 1800 miles to the Gulf of Mexico.  Terrain ranges from high-desert mesas to alpine forests with elevations from 7600 to over 14,000 feet above sea level.  There are four wilderness areas that are shared with other forests and over a thousand miles of trails.  Forest headquarters are located in Monte Vista.
