Piedra Special Management Area is a protected area within the
Pagosa Ranger District of
San Juan National Forest in Archuleta and Hinsdale Counties. In the Colorado Wilderness Act of 1993, Piedra was designated as a special area with wilderness characteristics, though it is not an official Wilderness Area. The area is named for the Piedra River, a major tributary of San Juan River, that flows through the area. Recreational opportunities in the area include hiking, camping, horseback riding, hunting and fishing. All mechanized and motorized vehicles are prohibited.
