San Juan National Forest

San Juan is a 1.8 million-acre National Forest in southwestern Colorado.  The forest contains most of the southern San Juan Mountains west of the continental divide.  Terrain ranges from high-desert mesas to alpine forests.  The forest was established in 1905 by President Roosevelt.  There are three wilderness areas that are shared with other forests and hundreds of miles of trails.  It is bordered by Rio Grande National Forest to the east and Uncompahgre National Forest to the north.  Forest headquarters are located in Durango.
