North River Wetlands Preserve is a 6,000-acre restoration project by the
NC Coastal Federation in eastern Carteret County aimed at converting farmland back to wetlands. It is one of the largest wetland restoration projects in the country. The project began in 1999 and approximately 3,000 acres of farmland have been restored to their natural state. The preserve is open to the public for hiking and nature viewing with 20 miles of roads for exploration.
Directions:
From Beaufort, head east on US-70 for about 10 miles to the community of Otway and the entrance to the preserve will be on the left.
