Waterfall Hero Hikes: Fires Creek Recreation Area

Fires Creek Recreation Area sits in the remote western corner of the Tusquitee Ranger District of Nantahala National Forest in Clay County near Hayesville, centered on the clear, trout-rich waters of Fires Creek. The area is known for its peaceful picnic spots along the creek, a short 0.7-mile loop that reaches the modest but scenic Leatherwood Falls, and a network of trails that range from easy riverside walks to the demanding 25-mile Rim Trail. That blue-blazed rim route climbs the surrounding ridges, crosses high-elevation balds, and delivers long views when the foliage cooperates, while also allowing horseback use on some sections. Campers will find primitive options at places like Bristol Horse Camp and Huskins Branch Hunters Camp, and the whole place doubles as a wildlife sanctuary where black bears, deer, and other forest animals are common. It’s free, open year-round, and stays relatively quiet compared with more heavily visited Smokies destinations.

Directions:

From Hayesville, go north on Tusquitee Street and cross Hiwasee River. Turn left on Fires Creek Road and drive 4.6 miles. Turn right on Fires Creek Wildlife Road and go just under 2 miles to enter the area.

Bristol Trail (#76)

Bristol Trail starts from the Bristol Horse Camp, crossing Fires Creek on a bridge and then ascending up to Rim Trail at Carvers Gap.

Cover Trail (#74)

Cover Trail follows Fires Creek from Leatherwood Falls Picnic Area to Bristol Trail. The first section from the picnic area is paved. There are numerous creek crossings along the way.

Leatherwood Loop (#73)

Leatherwood Loop starts at the picnic area and leads up to the top of Leatherwood Falls, then crosses Leatherwood Branch and descends down to the road back near the picnic area.
