The Elkin & Alleghany Rail Trail is a 2-mile multi-use trail running from Elkin north past the Town of Elkin Reservoir. The trail follows the old Elkin & Alleghany Railroad bed. The railroad began construction in 1911 with a planned route from Elkin to West Jefferson. Due to financial difficulties and the advent of the automobile, the railroad was abandoned in 1931. The Elkin Valley Trails Association was established to promote trails in the area, including the E&A Rail Trail, which is also part of the statewide
Mountains-to-Sea Trail and
Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail.
