White River National Forest

White River National Forest is a 2.3-million acre National Forest in central Colorado and is the most visited national forest in the United States with over 10 million visitors per year.  The forest was originally established in 1891 as the second timer reserve to be established.  The forest contains eleven ski resorts, eight wilderness areas, ten 14ers and over 2500 miles of trails.  There are five ranger districts and the forest is headquartered in Glenwood Springs.

The Holy Cross Ranger District surrounds the resort town of Vail and a significant portion of the district is designated wilderness.
