Watauga Lake (Cherokee)

Watauga Lake is a 6,400-acre created with the construction of TVA Watauga Dam in 1948.  Much of the surrounding land is part of Cherokee National Forest and has numerous opportunities for recreation on and off the water.  The forest service has several recreation sites along the lake for swimming, picnicking, fishing and boating.  The long-distance Appalachian Trail runs along the lake between Pond Mountain Wilderness and Big Laurel Branch Wilderness.  Developed camping is available at Cardens Bluff and dispersed camping is found along the trail.
