Tsali Recreation Area, located on a hilly peninsula jutting into Fontana Lake within North Carolina’s
Nantahala National Forest, is a premier destination for mountain biking, horseback riding, and hiking, named after the legendary Cherokee resistance leader Tsali. Part of the
Cheoah Ranger District, its network of four interconnected singletrack loops—Left Loop (about 11.9 miles), Right Loop (13.9 miles), Mouse Branch (8.7 miles), and Thompson Loop (7.3 miles)—winds through hardwood forest with frequent views across the lake toward the Great Smoky Mountains. Hikers are welcome any day, while bikes and horses alternate on designated schedules to reduce conflicts, creating opportunities for peaceful outings. The area’s proximity to Fontana Dam, combined with its challenging yet scenic trails , makes it an ideal spot for soaking in the rugged beauty of the southern Appalachians.
