Smugglers' Notch State Park

Smugglers' Notch State Park is a Vermont State Park in Lomoille County north of Stowe, named for a narrow pass in the Green Mountains.  In 1807, President Jefferson passed an embargo forbidding trade with Canada and Great Britain.  As northern Vermont is closer to Canada than US markets, smuggling goods through the pass was common, continuing illegal trade.  During Prohibition, the pass was again used to smuggle liquor from Canada.  Today, there is a campground and many miles of trails in the park and surrounding Mount Mansfield State Forest.
