Roanoke River National Wildlife Refuge

Roanoke River National Wildlife Refuge is a 21,000-acre Wildlife Refuge in Bertie County, North Carolina.  The refuge consists of several tracts of land along the lower Roanoke River.  Established in 1991, the refuge protects the river's floodplain forests, thought to be one the largest intact bottomland forest ecosystem in the mid-Atlantic region.  The area has the highest density of nesting birds in North Carolina.  Managed as Game Land by the state, there are opportunities for hunting, fishing, wildlife viewing and hiking.
