Lumber River State Park encompasses more than 9000 acres of land and 115 miles of the Lumber River in Scotland, Hoke, Robeson, and Columbus Counties. The Lumber River has been designated as a National Wild and Scenic River, the only blackwater river in North Carolina to receive such a designation. The river has played an important role in the development of the local economy and the area around the river was extensively logged. Princess Ann was a small town on Griffin's Bluff, the second town to be chartered in Robeson County. As railroads replaced river travel, the town disappeared and now only the bluff on which it was located still remains. The park features several access points to the river for float trips of varying length. The Princess Ann and Chalk Banks access areas have camping, picnic areas and short hiking trails.
