Fonta Flora State Trail

The Fonta Flora State Trail is an ambitious 100-mile hiking and biking trail project in western North Carolina that will eventually connect Morganton to Asheville. Authorized in 2015, the trail includes a scenic 29-mile loop around Lake James and traverses Lake James State Park, portions of Pisgah National Forest, and Fonta Flora County Park in Burke County, while also connecting to the Overmountain Victory State Trail and the Mountains-to-Sea State Trail. Currently, about 20 miles of the trail are open for public use, featuring well-maintained natural surface paths with gentle grades, spectacular lake views, and notable features like a scenic covered bridge near the Linville Boat Access and a 250-foot single span bridge over Lake James. The trail takes its name from the historic community of Fonta Flora, which was partially submerged when Lake James was created. The trail is marked with distinctive red-orange feathers and welcomes both hikers and mountain bikers year-round, offering an accessible outdoor recreation experience suitable for various skill levels.
