Buffalo Rock State Park is a 298-acre Illinois State Park along the Illinois River in LaSalle County. The sandstone bluffs on which the park the located were once an island in the river. The park was once inhabited by Illinois Native Americans and later the French established a trading and military fort at Buffalo Rock. Chicago-based Crane Company bought the land in 1912 as a sanatorium for employees and then sold it to the state in 1928. Effigy Tumuli is an earth-art project by artist Michael Heizer in the park, consisting of earthen mounds in the shapes of animals native to the Illinois River.
