Jean Lafitte National Historical Park & Preserve

Jean Lafitte National Historical Park & Preserve is a National Park Unit that consists of six units that protect that natural and cultural history of southern Louisiana.  The park is named for the French pirate Jean Lafitte.  Chalmette Monument was originally designated in 1907 to commemorate the Battle of New Orleans.  It was transferred to the National Park Service and became Chalmette National Park in in 1939.  Chalmette was then incorporated with the other sites to become Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve in 1978.
