Howell Woods Environmental Learning Center, also known as the Rudolph Howell & Son Environmental Learning Center, is a sprawling 2,800-acre natural sanctuary located in the Bentonville community of southeastern Johnston County, North Carolina. Owned and operated by Johnston Community College, the property was generously donated in 1993 by Rudolph Howell with the vision of creating an outdoor classroom for environmental education and public recreation. Nestled between the Neuse River and nearby creeks in the heart of the Neuse Lowgrounds, it boasts a rich diversity of habitats, including bottomland hardwood forests, wetlands, ponds, and streams that support abundant wildlife and serve as a living laboratory for learning about eastern North Carolina's ecosystems. Visitors can enjoy miles of trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and dog walking; opportunities for canoeing, fishing, birdwatching, camping, and controlled hunting; as well as educational programs, live animal exhibits, and cabins for rent, all while promoting environmental stewardship and hands-on exploration of the natural world.
