Haw River State Park

Haw River State Park is a 1400-acre park north of Greensboro in Guilford and Rockingham Counties. The park protects an area of wetlands around the upper Haw River. As one of the newest state parks, the recreational opportunities are currently limited. The main part of the park has the Summit Environmental Education and Conference Center. The retreat center, formerly owned by the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina, is NC State Park's first residential environmental education center. Additionally there are about 2 miles of hiking trails near the center and another 3 at the Iron Ore Belt Access. More recreational activities will become available as the park grows.

Great Blue Heron Loop:

Length: 3.2 miles
Difficulty: Moderate
Blaze: Orange Squares

Great Blue Heron Loop is accessed from the Iron Ore Belt Access. The trail makes a big loop through the area towards the floodplain of Haw River.

Piedmont Loop Trail:

Length: 1.4 miles
Difficulty: Easy
Blaze: Blue Squares

Piedmont Loop Trail makes a loop starting from the visitor center and main lodge. At the northern end of the loop, Wetlands Boardwalk splits off.

Wetlands Boardwalk:

Length: 0.4 miles
Difficulty: Easy
Blaze: Blue Squares

Wetlands Boardwalk splits off from the Piedmont Loop Trail and leads through the Haw River wetlands to an overlook for the river.
