Crystal Springs Recreation Area

Crystal Springs Recreation Area, nestled just south of Wytheville, Virginia, spans 1,800 acres of pristine land at the foot of Sand Mountain, offering a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Originally preserved as a watershed, the area features a historic reservoir along Venrick Run, now a scenic spot for wading and wildlife observation. Visitors can explore a network of trails, including the 2.1-mile Crystal Springs Loop and the challenging 7-mile Boundary Trail, ideal for hiking, mountain biking, and trail running. The park also boasts a mountain bike terrain park, primitive and backcountry campsites, picnic areas, and vault toilets. Part of the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation’s Kids in Parks TRACK Trails program, it engages families with interactive signs and brochures, making it a perfect destination for nature lovers of all ages.

Boundary Trail leads around the perimeter of the park for more than seven miles.


Crystal Springs Loop


Crystal Springs Loop is a 2-mile trail around the lower end of the area.


High Rocks Spur Trail


High Rocks Spur Trail splits from Boundary Trail and leads up to High Rocks.


Shortcut Trail


Shortcut Trail connects Boundary Trail in two places.
