The Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site, located in Flat Rock,
North Carolina, preserves Connemara, the 264-acre farm and residence where Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, biographer, and folklorist Carl Sandburg spent the final 22 years of his life from 1945 to 1967. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, this serene property - originally built in the 1830s - offered the solitude Sandburg needed to write more than a third of his works, while his wife Lilian raised champion dairy goats on its rolling pastures. The site features the historic 22-room home, filled with over 12,000 books and original furnishings; a working goat farm with descendants of Lilian's herd; five miles of scenic hiking trails; and gardens, ponds, and orchards that reflect the family's rural lifestyle. Designated a National Historic Site in 1968 and opened to the public in 1974, it stands as the first
national park honoring a poet, inviting visitors to explore Sandburg's legacy through guided house tours and peaceful walks.
